Schoolcraft Peace Alliance: We Can’t Wait Until Tomorrow Written by Bria Anderson
In the field of peacebuilding, different organizations develop strategies for encouraging others to create and sustain peace. Some organizations operate on the idea that the only way to achieve peace is to force it upon others through their words and actions. Fortunately, Student Peace Alliance do not share that view, and the Schoolcraft Student Peace Alliance chapter in Michigan highlights the positive means of achieving peace on their campus. In partnering with several on and off campus organizations, the Schoolcraft Student Peace Alliance has participated and hosted multiple events over the past few months. These events include fundraisers such as Pennies for Peace Drive and participating in a Martin Luther King event.
“At our Pennies for Peace Drive, we asked people to donate $3 to the Student Peace Alliance, and in turn we tie-dyed t-shirts. It was one of those events that was serious, had a clear purpose, and yet it was fun at the same time,” said the Secretary for Schoolcraft Peace Alliance, Stephanie King. Among their many long-term projects, the biggest event that the Schoolcraft Student Peace Alliance chapter is working on is co-sponsoring the Midwestern Peace Conference this coming May. “Our goal is to first establish internal peace within ourselves, and then hopefully that peace will expand from within us to our community, and then from our community to the world. We are designing projects that we believe fit that idea,” said Polly Burnette-Egaan, President for the Schoolcraft SPA. “Thus far, we have risen to that challenge, and it’s been really positive.” |
