The West Linn City Council pitched its support toward the creation of a U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence Monday, becoming the fourth city in Oregon to join a national grassroots political movement. West Linn High School seniors Lucas Pinelli, Kirk Larson and Chelsea Callas presented the idea to city councilors at a regular meeting Monday. The three 17-year-olds had already briefed the council on their proposed resolution at a work session in October.

 Over the summer recording artist Jack Johnson invited the Student Peace Alliance to table at concerts during his summer concert tour. Student Peace Alliance members organized to table at over 15 concerts across the country and with Jack Johnson's help raised $5,000!

The Peace Alliance, the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization leading the growing grassroots movement active in all 50 states for creation of a U.S. Department of Peace, announced that it is in the process of creating The Peace Alliance Educational Institute, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization focusing on violence prevention education and research.

 Ben & Jerry's, the Vermont-based socially conscious ice-cream maker, announced that Aaron Voldman, Executive Director of the Student Peace Alliance (SPA) and a member of the Board of Directors of The Peace Alliance, is one of two nationwide winners of its "Peace Pioneer" contest. The announcement was made on May 27, 2008 at its New York City Times Square Scoop Shop.
